BUILD & FALL

PALE

GROVE

Pale

Employing the strategies of performance in photography, in my project, Pale, I endeavoured to capture a 21.6 second performance, which is the amount of time it takes to continually shoot sixteen exposures on my camera using 120 film stock.

According to Roland Barthes, the photographic image serves as a memorial to a 'dead event'. I use the camera to record a live performance, which in its process and exhibition becomes a dead performance. Using the story of Salome to illustrate this concept of

death (as she allegedly danced for the death of John the Baptist), for the duration of the performance I unravelled seven metres of material to emphasise this very notion of photographic death.
